Board Seeks Housing Authority With Specific, Focused Scope

MOSCOW – How to pursue a local housing authority, in light of city budget priorities and new state legislation, was the topic of the regular meeting Thursday of the Moscow Fair & Affordable Housing Commission.

Commissioners determined to do research in their areas of expertise, assess what they see as priorities, and begin to develop at the next meeting what to prioritize and work on together to advance specific recommendations to the Moscow City Council.

Among their areas of expertise, two commissioners work in real estate, two have affiliations with Palouse Habitat for Humanity, and one works in economic modeling. 

The group reviewed recent state laws that encourage smaller, denser housing – with the aim of increasing affordability – and discussed the recent City Council workshop about affordable and attainable housing (https://moscowidaho.news/2026/05/28/moscow-city-council-housing-workshop-may-26th-2026/).

The commission agreed that it needs to present good research to the City Council in order to argue for housing as a strategic plan and budget priority. It also assessed that a starter-home shortage seemed the best specific focus for a local housing authority. 

The next regular meeting of the Fair & Affordable Housing Commission is scheduled for July 2; but staff conflict will likely see the meeting rescheduled or canceled.
